Who should be listed as author?

From a recent DR-ED listserv discussion, a comment from Georges Bordage:

Kauser: Here are the basic criteria for authorship as defined by Huth, the former editor of the Annals of Internal Medicine. These criteria have been adopted by journals widely.

“An author should:

1- Have generated at least a part of the intellectual content of a paper (i.e., conceiving of or designing the study; collecting and interpreting the data; interpreting data is required; collecting data does not by itself justify authorship);

2- Have taken part in writing the paper, or reviewing it for possible revision, or revising its intellectual content (not just its technical content);

3- Be able to defend publicly in the scientific community all of the intellectual content of the paper.”
